  1. You would use simple distillation when the two products you are trying to separate have very different boiling points. Fractional distillation is needed when the two products have very close boiling points (like ethanol and water).

  2. fractional distillation is a process which involoves distillation ( a process of converting a liquid into vapour by heating and the subsequent condensation of the vapour back into a liquid is called distillation) and collection of different liquids boiling at different temparatures. this method is used to seperate two or more miscible liquids. as we know that each liquid has its own boiling point which is different from the others, so we take advantage of this difference in their boiling points to seperate them.

but complete seperation is possible only if the boiling points of the liquids by 30 degree C or more. if the difference is less, a fractionating column is fitted over the distilling flask( so that the liquids will condense at different levels due to difference in their boiling points).

for example, crude petroleum is fractionally distilled to get various factions, some of which are: 1. natural gas 2.naphtha

3.kerosene oil  4.diesel oil and 5. lubricating oil

  3. splitting crude oil into different levels by heating
