Question:

SCUBA Boat Dive in Catalina?

My wife and I would like to go on a boat dive in August to Catalina. Any suggestions? We would prefer to leave out of So. Cal, dive, then be returned that day. Lunch and tanks should be included.

One additional note, we are certified open water divers and experienced (though it has been awhile).

  1. There are several great dive boats on Catalina:

There are several ferries from LA and Orange Counties every day.  A two-dive day trip can be easily done.

If this is your first time diving in CA, the conditions here are cold.  Water temps range from 50-65 F, even in August.  You'll need full exposure suits and your body works harder than in warm water.

Also, since you mention it has been a while since you've been diving, I strongly recommend you take a PADI SCUBA refresher course.  Lastly, you may want to hire a Divemaster for the day in Catalina.

    Have fun and dive safely!

  2. if you are going to So Cal go to the kelp forest. of all the diving places i have been, the kelp forest are the best diving i have ever done! there is nothing like swimming through the forest, watching the world sway in the tide and then have to stop and yield to a nurse shark lazily swim by.

monery bay is a protected area, beautiful, just amazing. SO cal has amazing diving, jsut be sure to wear something warm.
