SDC: PE/Science?

Question

I am a middle school Social Cognition (autism population) teacher. I recently had to create my own PE/Science class because students were too low-functioning to join a regular PE even with extra support.

I have 5 students and no aides. 2 of my students are non-verbal and all of my students lack many physical skills. I need to find very basic PE activities with minimal equipment. If anyone has ideas I would be more than excited to hear them! Also, I am supposed to teach physical and earth science to these same students. Their academic levels range from K-2. I am really beyond myself about what materials/activities I can do. If you have any resource information/units I would be grateful!!!!!!

I teach a similiar class, but luckily I have aids.

First, for PE: Most activities that we have done work on gross motor skills. Some examples are setting up cones and having students walk, run, etc around them; giving the students balloons and turn on music- they have a great time hitting them back and forth trying to keep them in the air; "jump" over a jump rope while you hold it an inch or two above the ground; give each student a ball and have them practice kicking, throwing or rolling it; follow the leader or simon says with simple things- fly like an airplane, jump up and down, pat head; anything with music is good for my kids- we do the hokey pokey, chicken dance, wheels on the bus, etc (those may be too young depending on your kids) or we'll even just turn on some music and "dance" We have a great PE teacher who does an adapted class with just my kids. You might want to talk to one of the P.E. teachers at your school to see if that is possible.

For Science- one of my favorite science series is the Science Works for Kids series. They have all kinds of activities that can be adapted if needed. I also like the mailbox magazine  for science and writing activities

You could also get a science book or talk to one of the science teachers to find the topics the typical classes are covering and find experiments or lesson plans for your kids on their levels. Good Luck!
