SEA Games: Mingtian Fu wins Women’s Singles crown to create history
Singapore’s Mingtian Fu has created history as she has become the first shuttler of her country to win the Women’s Singles crown at the SEA (South East Asian) Games, which ended on Saturday, November 19, in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Mingtian, who is currently enjoying 26th position in the Women’s Singles world standings, delivered terrific performance and made upset by beating the home favourite Adrianti Firdasari of Indonesia in front of the hostile Indonesian crowd. The
Singaporean won the battle with a tight difference after working extra hard for three games.
It was a mouth-watering fight as both ladies maintained thrill and suspense until the ending points of the final game. The Indonesian remained unlucky in the end as her rival won a controversial point in the end of the final set and left Firdasari in despair.
The match opened in a wonderful way as the local shuttler played up to the expectations of the home crowd. Firdasari controlled and dictated the pace of the rallies throughout the set and spared no chance for her opponent to fight back in the game. Mingtian
failed to play positive and fast badminton and lost the opening game with a 14-21 score.
In the following set, the Singaporean delivered phenomenal performance against the local shuttler. She played aggressive game from the starting points and remained ahead of her rival in the whole set. Firdasari completely failed to match the speed of her
challenger. Mingtian took the set with an incredible margin of 21-12.
In the deciding game, both shuttlers played positive badminton and kept the pace at the maximum level. Until the concluding phase, no one could manage a comfortable lead.
At the ending points of the final set, Mingtian remained lucky in executing a difficult net shot which helped her to take the game with a 22-20 score on the board. The overall result of this thrilling fight was 14-21, 21-12 and 22-20.
After winning the match, Mingtian said, “Although I was behind by one point, the game was not over and I could not give up.”
She further added, “The Indonesian supporters are very intimidating. I did not let such external factors affect me; I chose to focus on my game. I had to count on my own motivation at this stage, and thankfully I also had the support of Singaporeans here
who were cheering me on.”
By winning the final contest, Mingtian has become the first Singaporean female shuttler who has clinched the gold medal in the SEA Games.
