well my question is how would only one back link from a website with unrelated content with a pagerank of 3 affect my website ?I repeat I can purchase a link from a pagerank3 website , how would it affect my ranking ?

One-way unrelated website or link-farm will never harm your website. In the case of link exchange with unrelated or link farm may the cause of harm. Google seriously penalizes the websites engaging in buy and sell. So donot purchase text links.
