Background:

She have been working in the company for 3 years, with satisfactory work history. Never receive complains.

She has extraordinary relationship with co-workers and bosses.

However, due to the work nature, she has developed serious sleep disorder and superior depression (with suicidal thoughts), plus many other illnesses.

She planned to resign from her work place. However, by resigning, she got nothing, as in Canada (where I also live), unemployment insurance will not pay for resigning. But if she got herself fied, she will receives $2700 from her company by firing her and receive estimate $1000 monthly for 8 - 10 months of Unemployment Insurance.

Should she get herself fired, or resign ???(as working where she works is no way). Do you have any comment or better suggestion for her. I am stuck and don't know how to help her.

  1. She needs to look at not just everything you have here, but also the look of her future resume.  It looks bad to an employer to see that the person has been fired from a job.  She will have to explain she chose to be fired for the severance package instead of resigning with nothing.

I would take the firing and the severance pack so I knew I had something in the bank while I look for better employment.

  2. she should show up late everyday and leave early. any boss would fire an employee for that.

  3. I am a manic-depressive and delt with the same issues. Have her see a doctor and get treated. If the problem persist she she aplly for disability.

  4. Might as well get fired.  She can get more sleep and make some money while she's at it. Hope she gets better; sorry I can' t be of much help.

  5. Try to see if she can get SSI ,if she 's that bad and doctor.

  6. i guess try to get fired or tell her boss her situation n c what he can do to help her

  7. Well, she may want to resign.  It may help her to know that she was able to take control of the situation and get herself out of it.

Getting herself fired may hurt her in looking for other jobs, she'd have no good references and I don't know how Canada works, but in the US, you don't get unemployment if you were fired for cause.

She may have a choice of taking a leave of absence and may qualify for disability for mental illness?  Again, not sure how Canada compares to the US but it may be worth looking into.

  8. If she gets fired it will always count against her. Its better to figure out why the job is causing her a lack of sleep and then consider changing job positions. Unemployment can only last so long and then a potential employer might wonder if she was such a good employee for three years why mess up now?

  9. Even if she gets herself fired, she has to prove that she did NOT do anything intentional to get fired.  If she suddenly changes her normal way of being and ends up getting fired, it will appear that she did it on purpose and will get denied.  Being fired does NOT automatically entitle anyone to benefits.

She needs to go to a GOOD reputable DOCTOR, get the medications she needs, and ask how to file for disability.

This is a touchy situation - if I were you, I would not make any other suggestions to her OTHER than to get to a Doctor, and FAST.

  10. it's a trade-off.  in the US we can't collect unemployment if we're fired for just cause (our fault), just if we're laid off.  Might she have a case for complaining to the labor board about a hostile work environment?  Better to try to solve the problem than run away from it, I say.  Both getting fired and quitting are running away.
