  1. I'd go under or near the lowest indoor stairwell, but avoid getting too close to windows/glass doors.  You can also probably try calling 311 (NOT 911) or local schools or churches to see if there is any other close underground shelter.  I hope you stay safe!

  2. "What to Do During a Tornado

If you are under a tornado WARNING, seek shelter immediately!

    If you are in:  Then:

A structure (e.g. residence, small building, school, nursing home, hospital, factory, shopping center, high-rise building) Go to a pre-designated shelter area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar, or the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your head and neck. Do not open windows.

A vehicle, trailer, or mobile home Get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a sturdy, nearby building or a storm shelter. Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes.

The outside with no shelter Lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands. Be aware of the potential for flooding.

Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location.

Never try to outrun a tornado in urban or congested areas in a car or truck. Instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safe shelter.

Watch out for flying debris. Flying debris from tornadoes causes most fatalities and injuries"

Don't know the layout of your home, but you should be on the bottom floor as far from the outer walls as possible. If you can, take a mattress with you in case anything were to blow through to help protect you from flying debris. If do not know anyone on the bottom floor that you can visit, check around for local schools or stores that may be open to provide shelter.

  3. Wow we had really bad weather yesterday I live in SouthWest Iowa. But go to the bottom floor of your apt. and go into a room with no windows and preferably on the interior of your house like in a closet in the middle of your apt. Hope I helped and if its anything as bad as ours was hope you are ok afterwards. We had tornado warnings til like 1 this morning since like 5 last night some counties the entire time!!!

  4. i would not be worried about tornadoes too much as unlike it is with hurricanes a tornado damage is very selective.  for example it may completely destroy one house but not touch at all another one located right across the street.  in other words you really have to have a bad luck for you to get hit by a tornado.

still, if you are worried too much, you may try contacting your local authorities to see if there are designated shelters where you can stay over nights when the risk of tornado touch downs in your area is high.  again, if you are worried too much, you can also try taking a vacation for a couple of weaks and leaving the area and waiting till the weather calms down.  other then that follow basic precautions the first poster suggested.  good luck.
