SHIPPING CAREER ? How do I go about starting a career in shipping (deck officer) or related role,am 38 yo?

Am I to old to learn about this amazing industry ,where would I make an enquiry as I live in Sydney , Australia . I am very keen to give it a go . Thanks in advance...Richard

  1. Your local Coast Guard or equivalent, to get Ordinary Seaman's papers. They will tell you how the process works.

    Finding a job is NOT difficult. About half of the deck gang on my ship started sailing as a second career. You need to look online at some trade magazines. I might suggest a tug and barge company to start with- it's hard work, but not too hard, decent pay, and you'll learn very rapidly.
