I have a colt 1911 air pistol.

Whenever I aim for the target, the shot is fired either higher to the target.

The sights are only adjustable to the left of right.

How do I adjust the sights upward or downward?

  1. Figure out the correct "sight picture". If the blade is higher than the rear sight, file it to the correct size. If the blade is lower than the rear sight, file down the rear sight to the correct size.

  2. I wouldn't file anything down. Adjust the way you shoot. I have fixed sights on my 1911 .45. It shoots a little to the left so I aim a little to the right of the intended target. Over time you will learn to make the adjustment naturally. I don't even think about it anymore and I've won a couple of tournaments with my standard sights.

  3. Is it a CO 2 pistol?

I ask, because as the cylinder empties velocity will drop. Velocity has a lot to do with how your point of aim is going to produce point of impact. Distance to target is variable too.

Spring guns will have springs that get weaker with age.

I dont think I'd file anything.. shoot a lot  and fugure out what "hold" you need to work around the variables.

All that being said... proper sight picture for  handguns is what we call "6 o'clock hold", that is ... the sight picture should look like the target sits on top of the sights. That way you can see the target and it's not covered by the sights.

If your gun is adjusted right from the factory and hitting high your aiming high ...
