SL Benfica volleyball team wins the 14th Portuguese Cup – Volleyball news
The final match of the 14th Portuguese Cup took place on April 2, 2012.
The city that played host to the Portuguese national tournament was that of Lisbon. The venue of the competition was the Coimbra Multisports Hall which welcomed the two teams of SL Benfica as well as AA Espinho.
The match between the two Portuguese sides took four sets to reach its conclusion at the end of which SL Benfica turned out to be the victor. The win was accomplished by SL Benfica after defeating their opponents by the following final set scores: 21-25,
25-12, 25-16 and 25-15.
The final of the Portuguese Cup did not start off as usual as a minute’s silence was observed at the beginning of the match. This was done in memory of the captain of AD Machico, Marco Ruel, who passed away recently on March 27.
The coach of the Benfica squad, Jose Jardim, expressed his jubilation on the win his team was able to accomplish in the following manner, “AA Espinho entered well on the match and we, on the contrary, entered very heavy and with many errors on the defence.
That gave motivation to our opponent that gained confidence and won the first set. Afterwards we knew how to use the service wisely, serving short and aggressively, to prevent a good side out from AA Espinho and increased our efficiency in the block. I would
like to highlight the true volleyball festivity that is always the final of the Portuguese cup.”
The player that was able to score the highest number of points in the match was Fabricio Barros of AA Espinho as he tallied a total of 14 points for his team to become the best scorer.
On the other hand, the most active player on the SL Benfica side was Flavio Cruz who kept the opposing side under pressure by scoring a total of 13 points for his side.
The first set of the match was the only one in which AA Espinho was able to show some skill and competition was the next three sets were bagged by Benfica by storm.
