Sangakkara, in his MCC Spirit of Cricket-Cowdrey Lecture on Monday, criticised the board management for their inefficiency to improve the standard of the game and expressed serious concerns about the alleged political interference in cricketing affairs of
his country.
The ex-skipper’s daring revelations irked the political administration in Sri Lanka and the sports ministry asked the SLC to launch a probe against him.
The Sports Minister, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, said yesterday, “He has to get permission. He can't talk about the cricket administration or cricket. I have written to the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mal-Loye-c1879 of the cricket board to go into this and get me a report immediately."
However, the board has refused to utter even a single word about the issue as it does not want to disrupt its team’s crucial series.
A SLC statement told today, “In the light of the fact that our National Team is in the middle of a tour, we regret our inability to make any further comments at this stage.”
Sangakkara, during his hour long lecture, revealed many secrets about the political involvements and administrative loopholes of the cricket governing body of Sri Lanka.
He said, “Unfortunately to consolidate and perpetuate their power they opened the door of the administration to partisan cronies that would lead to corruption and wonton waste of cricket board finances and resources."
Political meddling in cricket management has always been a problem in Sri Lanka but it has got intensified in recent days and resultantly, the sports ministry has moved up to dissolve the entire administration of the SLC.
Provoked by the sheer and unabated tussle between politics and cricket in Sri Lanka, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has passed a decree, restricting all its member boards to separate sport from schism. As per the new rule, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 will be authorised
to cancel the membership of the board which allows political poking in its internal matters.
Some analysts suggest that the recent comments by Sangakkara are likely to stir up another severe controversy in Sri Lanka.
