Nagenahira Nagas’ skipper, Angelo Mathews, believes that the on-going http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 Premier League (SLPL) is a great platform for the local players to prove their credentials and make a name for themselves by performing well against some
of the world’s best cricketers.
Mathews’ team is going to take on Kandurata http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Warriors-c861 today in the second semi-final of the inaugural edition of the SLPL. The winner of today’s match will meet UVA Next in the final of the tournament on August 31, at Colombo.
Following the footsteps of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Sri Lankan cricket authorities started an event of their own this year. A number of international stars from all across the globe have taken part in the competition,
which is considered to be a success because of a massive television audience.
While talking to ESPNcricinfo, the Sri Lankan vice-captain expressed that the cash-rich tournament provided a huge opportunity to the domestic players to gain experience playing alongside the stars. Otherwise, Mathews maintains,
the Island’s domestic cricket does not get a lot of media coverage.
"I think the SLPL is a great opportunity for the future of Sri Lankan cricket, especially for the local players who are now getting a lot of experience and exposure," the all-rounder said. "They get to share a dressing room with the
cream of the intentional players as well the country's national players."
The 25-year-old cricketer is of the view that international cricketers have a lot more experience, which should help the local players enhance their skills.
Sri Lanka is a country which heavily relies on natural talent and school cricket to compete at the international level; however, he hopes that the on-going tournament will help the authorities improve the first-class cricket structure,
which is absolutely vital to for sustainable success at the global stage.
"Facing up to international bowlers, bowling to international batsmen, it's an experience they otherwise wouldn't have gotten. We've never had a domestic structure at a provincial level so it's great to see this tournament being put
together to make a provincial cricket structure come true," he added.
