  1. SLR ( single lens reflex ) stand away from a standard point and shoot camera for several Obvious, and main reasons.

You can change/swap out lenses from the body of a SLR camera, which makes shooting more professional, the quality of zoom you want, and angle, depends on the lens which you attach to the camera's body in the first place. You can be flexible, and get the best results. However, on a point and shoot camera, such is impossible, and you can't do this. Those cameras weren't meant to be able to change lenses, and your stuck with the same lame 3x zoom, and you can get nothing better  Point and shoot can be flexible, but not nearly as flexible as a SLR in any respect.

SLR cameras are usually much bigger than the average point and shoot camera, they are aimed to look more professional, and to impress clients. They are more comfortable to hold, and made more durable. Mainly because of their expense, they want to make sure that if you drop something so expensive, much damage wouldn't be done. Point and shoot cameras are much smaller than the average point and shoot.

Trust Me, SLR's Are Much Better,

you should make the switch to a DIGITAL/FILM slr, and you'll be suprised by the results you get. Point and shoots are great for the beginner, but if you want to pursue photography, you should get a SLR.

  2. There is no parallax with a single-lens reflex . You look right through the lens of the camera through a mirror . As the plunger in pushed , the mirror is lifted , and the image imprinted on the film .

With digital cameras , the image in the viewing window will be totally black and impossible to see just what you're getting , when out in bright sunlight . The single-lens reflex is held right up to the eye , cutting off the sunlight .

The digital single-lens cannot be viewed through the window , it's only for reviewing and deleting .

  3. Lee is right .... there is one other non-SLR camera ... Leica is the most well known and respected maker of rangefinder 35 mm cameras.  The one that was mentioned the you view from on top is called a TLR, twin lens reflex.  Look it up on google to see how SLR, TLR and Leica's look.

  4. SLR stands for  "Single Lens Reflex" and basically means that when you look through the viewfinder, you are looking at the exact image that the lens of your camera will see. Therefore you can compose the shot with much greater accuracy than a non SLR camera.

A non SLR camera has a viewfinder slightly above the lens (you can see the hole you are looking through at the front of the camera). This means you see a slightly different image to your camera's lens.
