  1. Nikon is the best brand.

  2. DSLR makers are of comparable quality for pictures, that's why only a few companies actually make DSLR cameras. Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Leica, Fuji, Pentax are all on par with each others camera quality and image quality. I have an Olympus E-510 and my images are as good as any other 10MP DSLR out there.

You have the D40, why are you looking to upgrade? That camera is a good camera and a solid choice. You could also consider the D60. The D60 sits betwen the D40 and D80. It could be a good choice for you. When you bought your D40, you didn't just buy another camera, you started on a system. By upgrading in the Nikon family, all of your lenses and accessories would work with the new camweras. If you do choose another brand, you are basically starting over.

  3. I'm sure this is still in debate lol, but as I've been searching the same thing I'll share with you what I've come across from friends, magazines and reviews.

Canon and Nikon would probably be your top 2, currently JDpower has ranked the Nikon SLR's as the best buy for 2007.

Sony takes great quality pictures, I got a few weeks to test one out (A350) and I was very happy with the results. I read in comparison reviews though that given a picture with the exact same settings on both cameras, the Canon and Nikon's were better.

There are some die hard Canon fans and some die hard Nikon fans, so if you are happy with your D40, you will really like the D80 and even the D60 for an upgrade.

One camera to check out that would be close to the D80 would be Canon's XSi, it's currently only 899.99 this weekend at Future shop, comes with a 18-55mm lense and for another $100 we also package in the 75-300mm telephoto lense
