My wife and I are going to Europe soon and we would like a new camera but we are having trouble deciding between a SLR or a Point and Shoot. We also are looking to have children in the next few years. We have looked at the Canon G9 it is a nice Point and Shoot. But we really don't want haul a big SLR around Europe. Any help would be great. Thanks

  2. Get a point and shoot.  Why? Because its easy to carry and will give you just as good a picture as a digital slr. The zoom lens and built in flash is  all built in so you can"t go wrong. Get a nice small Canon or Nikon.

  3. SLRs are no longer huge, okay not compact, but worth the extra bulk, the entry level models certainly aren't heavy or even that much more expensive than a top end compact such as a canon G9.

The canon G9 loses out on wide angle, so nice vistas of the cityscapes are compromised, it is also a bit noisy in low light because of the small sensor, also like all other compacts, photos look flat because small sensors cannot recreate shallow depth of field all that well.

Trip of a lifetime?  Great shots of the kids?

Has to be an SLR.  If you want something really compact that will give good quality for many years to come then may I be really really contentious?

Buy an olympus OM10.   Dead cheap.  No hassle with recharging batteries or memory cards.  Can get your film developed whilst you are away and get extra special shots enlarged and archived without cds fading etc.....

35mm still exceeds the quality of digital slrs.

I happily use digital SLRS and they are brilliant.  An Om10 is about as compact as a compact, but with better quality when you learn how to work it.

If you want digital then EOS400 is not much more than a G9 and compact.

You have to ask yourself "Is quality better than compact"  within reason of cost and size of course.

Any DSLR or compact is going to superceded in 2-3 years.

    A compact film SLR wont.

A compact digicam wont give pleasing results to my mind.

  4. SLR:

GREAT picture (Used by ALL professionals)

    Ultimate control

    Learning curve

    Expensive

    P & S:

    Decent Quality

    No Learning curve

    simple

    alot less control
