Question:

SNP v New Labour?

Have the SNP unwittingly done the opposite of what they stand for and united Scotland and England in the battle against Labour?

For the record, I don't want Scotland to be independant so I'm glad the two countries are standing together against the current shower of imbicles that sit in government.

  1. good win for the snp, doubt it will change brown and co though. they are so far out of touch with reality and the British people it's embarrassing to listen to them.

  2. snp all the give us our freedom

  3. The SNP achieved their result last night based on exactly what they stand for. Left of centre social democratic policies, which they are making a great success of implementing in Scotland. The fact is, that the majority of Scots are perfectly happy to be part of the UK, and it was striking that the SNP hardly mentioned their policy of Scottish independence throughout the bi-election campaign.

The success of the SNP in comparison to New Labour in Scotland is largely down to the fact that the SNP has successfully occupied the centre left political ground that New Labour have abandoned, as they continue their lurch towards the right in their efforts to gain votes in the south-east of England.

What the Scottish people want is genuine left wing, social justice based policies, combined with competent political management. The SNP administration have implemented more genuine left wing policies which benefit the people of Scotland in the past year, than the New Labour / Lib Dem coalition ever did in their 8 years as the Scottish Executive, and they have also proved themselves competent as the governing party of Scotland.

Despite being a Westminster bi-election, I tend to think that the SNP's success in Glasgow East  was just as much about the popularity of the SNP in devolved government, as it was about New Labour's unpopularity in government at Westminster, and perhaps more so.

It's just a pity that the SNP fielded such a weak candidate in John Mason. Although an extra SNP representative at Westminster certainly isn't a bad thing, I do have my doubts about Mason's suitability for the job. His blatant triumphalism as he entered the hall last night, before the recount had even begun, was quite worrying in fact.

  4. Very well put - i think you're right.

  5. Well done to the SNP,

The UK will never be United,

The Scottish dont want to be British, nor do the Welsh, and the English could not care less, lets all be Independant,

I think we should just have,

England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland, forget the UK,
