  1. Definitely not a V8, it is an inline 4

Depends on what you consider better.

This is a single over head cam (SOHC) engine with 2 valves per cylinder.

It would produce less power than a dual overhead cam (DOHC) engine.

However, it would be more fuel efficient than a DOHC engine.

  2. No it is not a V8, it's a 4 cylinder.

And yes vtec is better than DOHC.

Most if not all civics have 4 cylinder engines.

  3. You have 4 cylinder (v8 have 8 cylinder).

Your engine is SOHC. It is NOT better than DOHC.  You can have VTEC (technology) on both SOHC and DOHC.

VTEC is to optimize power and economy for wider RPM range.  DOHC makes the car breath easier. So it would get better MPG and HP (if all else being equal).  But usually DOHC care tuned for even more power and sacrifices MPG (so all else are NOT equal most of the time).

All 1995 Civic (except 1.5L CX) had 16 valve (4 valves per cylinder).  I just look it up on my service manual

    Good luck...
