Hey, this is what my math teacher taught us in Trigo!

Sine = Opposite/Hypotenuse

Cosine= Adjacent/Hypotense

Tangent= Opposite/Adjacent

It's a math acronym.

Sine = opposite / hypotenuse

Cosine = adjacent / hypotenuse

Tangent = opposite / adjacent

These are in reference to the sides of a triangle, and get you the results in degrees. If you want the answer in radians, multiply by pi and divide by 180.

In addition, there are three 'opposite' functions that are just 1 divided by the originals.

Cosecant = 1/sine = hypotenuse / opposite

Secant = 1/cosine = hypotenuse / adjacent

Cotangent = 1/tangent = adjacent / opposite

SOH stands for Sine equals Opposite over Hypotenuse.

CAH stands for Cosine equals Adjacent over Hypotenuse.

TOA stands for Tangent equals Opposite over Adjacent.

hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle)

opposite (the side furthest from the angle)

Example: Find the values of sin θ, cos θ, and tan θ if the opposite = 3, hypotenuse= 5 and adjacent=4.

  

Answer: sin θ = 3/5 = 0.6

cosθ = 4/5 = 0.8

tanθ = 3/4 = 0.75
