SONY Handycam DCR-HC28...The question EVERYONE wants the answer to!?

Okay, So I'm sure EVERYONE knows how annoying it is to own the Sony Handycam DCR-HC28?!

You get your camera, start fliming and all is going great! ... Then you take it to edit on your computer and realise you didn't get any cords with it! =(

So you go buy the cords, and since it needs firwire ones... I had to buy an adapter so It goes = Cam>Firewire cord>Adaptor>USB cord>Computer.. !

So it's all good now? NO! I go into Movie maker to download it but the computer doesn't recognise it! That's on Vista and XP...

Then I find out I need a driver, which is non-existant!

What in the world do I do?!

PLEASE! Any Info will be great! ♥

  1. The HC28 is a fine entry level camcorder...

You almost got it... Your computer needs a firewire port. Firewire (also known as IEEE1384a, i.LINK or DV) is very different from USB. There are MANY posts here, forums.cnet.com and elsewhere that indicate the firewire/USB adapter converters do not work for DV import. This is because the video editors are looking for a firewire port to import DV from the camcorder. USB won't work.

Whoever told you that the Firewire -> USB would work should be made to get it to work on YOUR computer. I have NEVER seen them work.

Hopefully your computer has an available expansion slot so you can add a firewire400 port. Then you connect the correct firewire cable to the DV port on the camcorder and the firewire port on the computer and you should be good to go.

Heads up: The DV port on the miniDV camcorder is ALWAYS 4-pin. The firewire 400 port on the computer can be either 4-pin or 6-pin. You will need either a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable (most common) or a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable... it depends on the firewire port that ends up on your computer.

For those of you reading this using a Macintosh: All Macs in the last ten years or so already have a firewire 400 port. (The only exception is the new MacBook Air). You will need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable.

  2. tell windows to find your driver! :)
