Question:

SOS, Urgent help needed?

have winxp pro on my laptop. Yesterday I downloaded Avast home edition. My problems started thereafter. My computer slowed down by about 30%. The icons of 'add remove programs', system, system restore stopped responding. These would not respond for around 15 minutes after the boot and then start responding. I ran scan with avast and it detected some trojans which I placed in the chest.

I use IE, opera and firefox. IE has already a problem that it takes around 15 minutes to connect to internet after the boot whereas opera and firefox immediately do. This problem is earlier than avast.

Smelling something bad with avast, I uninstalled it after 2 hours. Now I have problem with unresponsive icons as said above as well as this one that my computer does not restart or shut down. It hangs on 'saving your settings'.

I have spybot and spyware doctor. I don't have any antivirus at present. Are those Trojans which were in the chest of avast gone or still in the system?

KINDLY HELP ME AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE AS IT IS MAKING ME CRAZY.

  1. I'd say uninstall Avast, and install ZoneAlarm Pro. I've used this for several years with no problems.

Norton on the other hand starts running dog slow after about 1 1/2 years.

  2. Use these Guides and Tutorials to clean pretty much 70% or more of the malware:

If you still have problems with malware, then follow the instructions on this section of the forum:

  3. Go here and follow this thread from start to finish.  If there are virus problems on your computer, you should be doing well or done by the time you get to the end:

If there are still problems after that, check the other "stickies" to see if they help:

    EDIT:

Oops!  I was only checking my link worked and then meant to click the Edit, not Submit!  :-D

If you still have problems after that, try this:

    Click on Start --> Run.

Type in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and with a space between the c and /

You might need your Windows CD and this could take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.  It's checking to see if any system files need replacing.  Run Windows Update when it is finished because I'm not sure if you'll end up with older files on your computer, but at least they should be ones that work.

  4. Avast is a great anti-virus,my guess would be you downloaded it from a site you shouldn't have.I've used it for years and still am,I've had no problems.

    www.malwarebytes.org

Try that and run a full scan.

  5. avg scuks use nod32 antivirus

    get it from www.eset.com

  6. Your system is badly infected.  You could try using a good pay-for product, but I'm concerned that at this point you may be unable to install or update it.

Your best bet is to save your data (docs, pics, music, video) and any downloaded programs and keys, and wipe your hard drive and reinstall.  Then recover your data and get something better for your security.  Apparently the free product isn't good enough for the kind of exposure you have.
