SOS continue to apply the pressure

The future of Walthamstow stadium has recently been the subject of discussion between site owners London & Quadrant and business entrepreneur Bob Morton.

And while things appear to be progressing well for the SOS [Save Our Stow] and its supporters, the group remain persistent in applying the pressure to L&Q.

They have done this by publishing a full-page advertisement in all editions of the Epping Forest, Waltham Forest and Wanstead and Woodford Guardian series of newspapers, which serves east London. The group also plan on submitting a full planning application for the site in the coming weeks.

The iconic site was purchased from the Chandler family in August 2008 for £18.1million and has been land banked ever since.

The SOS group has gained tremendous support, with over 25,000 petitions signed from residents to the council, and Mayor of London Boris Johnson is also in favour of the regeneration scheme.

Morton has praised the efforts of the SOS group and lead campaigner Ricky Holloway. He said: “Ricky is very positive and optimistic and has done a very good job.”

Holloway said: “We are very encouraged now and can’t see how L&Q can hang on to the site much longer.

“We are delighted with Bob. He is a no-nonsense person who wants to strike the deal for the good of the borough and the greyhound racing industry.

“It’s what Waltham Forest badly needs. We have to have employment, houses are needed but it’s the jobs that leisure use will bring that are also so important.”

The plans for the site have been slightly tweaked and will be combining the development of more affordable housing with greyhound racing.
