  1. We've got all type of music and we listen to all sorts, I guess just like you. If you check Spain's top 40 today you can find Maná, Tokio Hotel, Juanes, Rihanna, Mika or Kylie Minogue with her latest single. The most popular ones are usually in English, American or British, and in Spanish, from Spain, but also Mexican, Argentinian and Colombian. Some Italian singers are also quite popular such as Laura Pausini, Nek or Eros Ramazotti. The most popular Spanish pop groups (from Spain) would be La Oreja de Van Gogh, El Canto del Loco, Pereza, La Quinta Estación, Alejandro Sanz...And Latin American ones such as Juanes, Shakira, Maná, Andrés Calamaro or Julieta Venegas.

Someone up there said something about Julio Iglesias and his son Enrique. Julio Iglesias's fans are usully v. old people, he and his family are actually a motive of jokes, not only because of his funny tanned skin and esthetic surgery, but also because of the funny way the speak. Just like Enrique, he's not only considered a bad singer-have you listened to him without playback???-but he doesn't even speak with a Spanish accent anymore. It's more like some sort of weird posh Miami accent.

About the typical music, as in national, it depends on the area, just as the dances. Many people mistakingly think that flamenco is the national dance, when really it's just typical from the South (Andalucía) just like Sevillanas. Actually, many Northerns-like myself-get a bit annoyed whem foreigners think Spain is all about bullfighters and flamenco. In the north the typical music is with backpipes and the dance is similar to the Irish and Scotish ones. In Galicia they dance something call Muñeira, in Cataluña the official dance is called Sardanas, the Jota in Aragón, Chotis in Madrid... The national dance for all the territory would be pasodoble (which is slightly similar to the Tango, but less passionate)

And a question to someone who answered before: what sort of clubs did you go to???? And where exactly did you lived? I'm pretty sure it was not Barcelona, San Sebastián, Bilbao, Vigo, A Coruña, Oviedo...Because you would not see people-especially young people-dancing FLAMENCO in a CLUB (?). No, not even for tourists. Maybe you were leaving in let's say Andalucía or Madrid? And maybe you didn't go to best, most glamorous or funkiest clubs?

  2. The typical Spanish music, (not what would be listened to in bars/discos, but what developed in Spain) is flamenco, and you can always find a good flamenco performance, can´t you?  no matter where you go, because, if nothing else, they do it for the tourists.

The typical dance, again, the one that developed there, is also flamenco, all the foot stomping, flirting, bullfighting gypsiness that mixes into its roots.  Many of the folk dances in Andalucía are based on flamenco, but aren´t true flamenco, and you´ll see the folk dances done in discos, by even the young people.  That´s still true, isn´t it?  Natives, recent visitors, help me here.  it was true when I lived there, anyway.

Isn´t Julio Iglesias still popular among the older set? and his son, Enrique? or is he only popular on this side of the ocean?
