Question:

SPANISH VERSUS ITALIAN- PLEASE HELP?

I just received my ALevel results yesterday and am over the moon that I got into the university degree that I was praying for =]

anyway, my degree is Modern Languages, French (advanced) and one other from beginners level. The problem is that Im totally torn between Spanish and Italian. I can't decide for the life of me.

Im attracted to spanish, because of more job opportunities and the fact that its apparently a little easier. But sooooo many people speak spanish and I hate the thought of being yet another person who can. Italian is less common, and Im more intrigued by the Italian culture... but then its back to the job opportunities thing :S

Please give any help you can. I have to decide really soon.

Thanks

  1. Well italian its easier but i highly recommend spanish.

  2. since you already know french, you find it has MANY MORE similarites to italian than it does w/ spanish. i speak all three, and for someone who already speaks french like you, italian will come even easier:

    italian: sorella

    french: soeur

    spanish: hermana

    english: cheese

    italian: formaggio

    spanish: queso

as you can see, knowing french, you can pick up italian easier than spanish. plus italian is prettier sounding than spanish.

  3. If you live in the US, Spanish will be incredibly helpful, not only for jobs, but in everyday use. There is also the fact that there are many more Spanish speakers than Italian speakers. This can be a bad thing as well (You don't want to be "just another Spanish speaker"), but it will open up communication with a LOT more people.

I would go with Spanish if I were you.

  4. I would say spanish unless your going to live in europe

  5. Well, when you said "But sooooo many people speak spanish and I hate the thought of being yet another person who can," that doesn't really make sense to me. Wouldn't you WANT to speak Spanish because since everyone is learning it you will be able to communicate with more and more people? I mean I know you might want to be different and if that is the case then maybe you should take Italian, although many people speak that as well. I think you should take Spanish because it is becoming a more "international" language everyday because, like you said, more and more people are learning it. Both languages are pretty similar and with your knowledge of French you could probably learn the other one on your own perhaps. Ok, well, weigh your pros and cons and make the decision you feel is right for you. Good luck! :)

  6. Learn Spanish now and then learn Italian later on.  The Spanish will be more immediately helpful to you.

  7. i picked italian because i though that everyone knows spanish do something different. if i could go back i would because its better for jobs. when you're out of college you can always learn italian. good luck (:
