i want to know the difference between PARAand POR

Dont they both mean "for"?

Yes, but the context of the sentence determines which one you should use.  "Por" can also mean "by" as in

Esta novela fue escrito POR Gabriel Garcia Marquez

(This novel was written BY Gabriel Garcia Marquez)

For example,

I worked FOR ten hours today

Hoy, yo trabaje' POR diez horas.

Another example:

This carrot is for my guinea pig.

Esta zanahoria es PARA mi cobayito.

A rule of thumb is that POR is usually for measures of time (ie I worked for ten hours) or amount (I paid a dollar for the carrot=yo pague' un do'lar por la zanahoria) and that PARA is for purpose, or intent.

There are many other examples, which require memorizing, but study and it will come to you naturally.

Para is like "in order to"

Por is through, via, or by way of. For instance "Yo viajo por avion". I travel by plane.

These are kinda simplified definitions and even native speakers get them mixed up. There are websites that can offer more definitive assistance if you need it.

They do both mean "for" One is used as "for the duration of" and the other one is used differently. Oh my gosh I just realized everything I've learned in high school has escaped my memory! Sorry I couldn't be a bigger help!

It depends on how you use the words in a sentence, for example:

PARA Maria = FOR Maria

Bamonos PARA el lago. = Lets go TO the lake.

And POR = for

I'm pretty sure you are more confused now than before with all of the different answers here.
