SS Grewal proposes expert foreign trainers: Hockey News
SS Grewa, the Assistant Trainer and Chief Co-coordinator of the National Training Camp, has proposed a bunch of specialist foreign trainers to perk up the performance of players, as well as the supporting staff.
In his views the idea for specialist coaches would leave the beneficial impacts on in the development and advancement of the sport.
As per his suggestions, they should be assigned specific duties to particular players. Jugraj Singh is a very competent short-corner master, so he should be given importance and training in this area by a foreign specialist. He stated that the situation would have improved if they inducted a foreign specialist to improve this part of the game. The foreign drag-flicker expert would not only enhance the capabilities of players, but additionally hone the skills of Jugraj Singh, he added. He recommended similar changes in all parts of the game including goal-keeping, midfield position, attacking and defence.
It is vital to mention here that the assistant trainer is currently supervising the National Training Camp in the absence of newly hired Chief Coach, Michael Jack Nobbs.
Grewal further stated that he had discussed the idea with the Australian-originated Nobbs. He continued, “I’ve spoken about this to Michael and he too is keen on roping in specialists. We don’t need someone permanently but one who can give his expertise on a consultant basis. This way, it won’t cost the government much. I’ve had a chat with a Hockey India official regarding this, let’s see what happens.”
It is worth mentioning here that there are currently seven trainers working with the Indian team including Grewal, Jugraj Singh, A.B. Subbaiah, Clarence Lobo, BJ Cariappa, Baljit Singh Saini and Mohd Riaz in the training camp. Jugraj is due to work on the short-corner techniques, Subbaiah with the goal-keeping section, while Lobo will work on the video assessment. However, there were no specific duties for the remaining experts.
The assistant trainer informed that they were mulling to organise some sessions with the sports psychologist in order to build up the confidence of the squad. Most of the squads work on this section and make the victories possible through such means, he added. He believes that a good vim could do more work than any trainer to boost the morale of players.
It is vital to mention here that the selection committee has announced a total of 48 probable players for the forthcoming Champions Trophy of which half are going through the fitness tests, while remaining on the attacking skills.
Grewal opined that the second stage of the camp is commencing from after one month in which physical fitness of players would be improved. He added, “’Exercise physiologist David John will be conducting a series of tests following which every player will be given a programme.”
The final selection of the core team comprises of 25 names, which will be announced in the month of August 2011.
