Does anyone have any information on the SS Lurners? We have an old mug from Germany, and we're guessing the SS Lurner is a ship. Help?

  1. hi does the mug have a picture on it?? also what does it say underneath?/

what makes you think its german??

  2. SS could indeed refer to a ship, but only a training ship

(SS=Schulschiff). All regular navy ships would have the designation SMS (Seiner Majestät Schiff = His Majestys Ship), followed by the name.

I couldn't find a training ship by that name, so you probably misread it.Keep in mind that in old german writing, an s, t, f can be easily confused.

The proverb could be "Zum Lieben a Schatz('rl), zum Trinken a Maß('l) (=A darling to love, a beer mug to drink). What is strange is that this is in distinctive bavarian dialect, which is very unusual for the german navy.Theres no region in germany that is further away from the sea than bavaria, so a reference to a ship would be rather unlikely.
