I am an incoming Freshman for my 08-09 school year and I am currently in a public school. I was in a program in Jr. High called AAA, I took classes 3 years ahead of me so know I am doing Junior class work. I keep hearing a lot about how hard SSAT's are and I know that I am going to study for them without a doubt but I need advice from anybody who has taken them in the past about what sorts of questions are on it and the difficulty or which subject threw off your score. I am applying to a few top 100 schools which probably makes it even tougher. By the way, math and science are my strong points.

  1. If you are referring to the SSAT, that is an exam that is taken by students in grades 9-11 in order to gain admission to a private or boarding high school.  It is not to be confused with the SAT, the test taken by 11th and 12th graders for college admission.

That said, the SSAT contains a vocabulary section, a reading section, a math section and an essay.  The vocab section consists of synonym identification, antonym identification and analogies, some of which are word-play puzzles.  The reading comprehension section is pretty standard, as is the math section.  The essay is used to gage your writing level.

The SAT is the exam that high school students take to get into college.  It consists of 9 sections: 3 math, 3 critical reading/vocab and 3 writing sections, including an essay.  The writing section is a grammar exam in multiple choice format; the reading section is a basic complete the sentence/comprehend the passage format and the math tests algebra, geometry and general arithmatic.

Regardless of which one you are supposed to take, you should know that you are penalized for incorrect responses and that you DO NOT need to answer every single question on the test to get a perfect score.
