SSI can they make me pay back money they gave me?

I was receiving SSI for the my son who was born with a mild heart condition, he is now 2 years old and I started working at the post office. I received a letter from the SSI office telling me I needed to come in because they wanted to see my pay stubs and prof of my new address. When I got there they checked my pay stubs then told me I had to pay them back the money I received over the last year for my son because I make over $1500 a forthnight and that's before tax. Can they really do that?? can they make me pay back money they gave me for my son's heart condition because I am now working????

Yes they can. I tried to apply for SSI for my son because he is mentally retarded and special needs, my doctor told me to apply because anyone with a special needs child can qualify, but because I work for the Government I didn't qualify and because my husband works we make over the amount allowable per month.  

No wonder there is so many people on welfare and receiving SSI and get there rent and utilities for free and party at the bars when they receive the SSI check ( i know this is true because a lady's daughter has a down syndrome child and every first of the month she spends all week long at the bar buying rounds for everyone and by the next week she is at her mother house asking for money)

It sad how things work.
