  1. Probably because Archer Daniels Midland can afford it.

  2. Hey there.  Wow, that's a crappy situation.  We need both our wildlife AND the produce you provide for us.  They only thing you can do is raise the price of your crops, and the only thing we can do is pay it, because we need them.  I'd be willing to pay extra for my vegetables in order to compensate for your loss.

  3. You Grow It, They Will Come.......

    :)>

  4. In the UK many farmers are adopting less intensive agricultural practices, cutting down on herbicides and pesticides, leaving larger hedgerows around fields to encourage bird and insect life back.  For this they are able to charge a premium, and many people are willing to pay it.

I think there would be resistance to paying a premium if everybody did it, but it is certainly a viable business model at the moment.

Given the higher global grain prices, there should be some optimism, if the higher prices make it back to the farmer.

  5. How are farmers 'responsible' for ANY wildlife? It's your land and your crops. If deer are invading and eating your crops, SHOOT THEM! Hunters are the most ecologically responsible people out there. They DO put their money where their mouths are because they realize what it takes to keep game available.

    Stupid city slicker

  6. Farming is a business like any other, John. there's a cost to doing business, and they all don't have to make sense.

Even so, I didn't see Willy Nelson get together to help my community  when the federal government shut down most forms of commercial fishing in New England. Farmers have it pretty good compared to some people. No one ever offered to pay me not to fish when I had 3 boats and 15 guys to support... plus, you guys get low-cost loans and have the option of selling out to conglomerates.

I understand you're frustrated by all the BS, but really, it could be a lot worse. Even so, I know what you're going through. I gave away my business because of the BS back in the 90's.

  7. CRP, is not a subsidy it pays farmers to set aside small parts of their farms to preserve wildlife habitats.

  8. First of all. I don't think your a stupid farmer if you are in fact farming. Are farmers required to financially support wild life preservation? The farmer is one of the best preservers of wild life, just by being a farmer.

Farming is hard core dedicated work most people (who don't farm)  take for granted.

I understand your frustration but the farmer has been socialized by their own voting practices.

Social elitist's that are constantly voted into office are destroying your profession. You should already know this...look at the fix your in.

Farmers are natural friends of the environment and it's surroundings. We should all support our local farmers more!

  9. check out ur local farm extension....we used CRP to pay to fence some areas, put in a new well and build new water troughs...but really we call deer field rats..the eat a lot...but we eat them..ha ha
