SU Hatters sweep Mercer Bears 5-0 in Sand Volleyball match – Volleyball news
The Mercer University women’s sand volleyball team crossed its ways with Stetson University squad in a Sand Volleyball match on Saturday.
The Mercer Bears totally collapsed in the match and received 0-5 defeat from Hatters.
In addition to Mercer Bears, the Stetson sand volleyball team (9-8) also defeated the hosts Jacksonville Dolphins earlier in the day. Hence, the SU Hatters wrapped up the team portion of the inaugural Atlantic Sun Conference (ASC) Championships with a winning
record.
The dynamic Stetson duo of No.1 seed Julie Bassett and Kaley Melville opened the match on a very good note. They overpowered Jamie Duffy/Cassie Roy of Mercer in a short span of time. The opening session covered its length in just two sets, while Bassett/Melville
emerged successful with 2-0 record. They posted 21-16 in the first set and claimed second set with an identical score of 21-16.
In the next flight, No. 2 seed of Stetson Maren Rygh and Alexa Stonish followed the footstep of their teammates and added another win to their tally. They were challenged by Jenn Katona/Monica Sanchez of Bears, who put up good fight in first set but failed
to overcome the strong opponents. The Stetson duo finished the second round without any loss and stamped 2-0 (22-20, 21-13) victory.
The SU Hatter kept the momentum going after winning first two session of the match. In the third flight, the pairing of Alisha Hoffman and Claudia Kalin came into stride with Mercer Bears No. 3 tandem.
Caroline Carlton/Emily Rochefort of Mercer struggled to break the ice for Bears but faced utmost resistance from the opposite side. The Hatters showed remarkable consistency in attack and defence, which enabled them to bag 2-0 (21-17, 23-21) win.
No. 4 seed Stetson which consisted of Katie DiGirolamo and Stephanie Marin provided further damage to the Mercer Bears. In the fourth session of the match, duo of Layna Braxton and Madison Petsos represented the Bears. The Hatters maintained their dominance
on the opponents and posted 2-0 (21-12, 21-7) win over Bears.
In the fifth and final flight of the match, Erin Brett/Lizzie Knapper of Mercer received 0-2 (11-21, 10-21) defeat from Savannah Byl/Kaylee Ream of Stetson. The Mercer pair seemed visibly disappointed as their teammates had dropped previous four sessions.
Hence, they played half-heartedly and easily gave out the game to Hatters.
The SU Hatters finished the match with an amazing 5-0 record and bagged superb victory. In the next run, the SU Hatters will travel to Gulf Shores, Alabama on Friday, April 27. They are scheduled to take part in the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships,
which will run through April 27-29. The Hatters are enjoying a great form and look forward to more success in the upcoming matches.
