  1. Find a Breeder, stay away from Pet stores... A Sun from a Breeder should cost about $250.00 to $350.00. A Pet store will charge more then $500.00.... Plus a breeder, a good breeder will be able to answer all your question now and down the road. Get you off to a much better start... Try Http://BirdBreeders.com to start your search....

  2. We have a Sunday and a Sun in our flock, they are awesome birds. They are super smart, acrobatic little clowns. They need a spacious cage, they will make use of all the space in their cages.  I agree with the person who said they can be loud. Mine can be very loud at times. I have my birds on a varied diet, since they wouldn't be eating only one thing in the wild. I buy sunseed parrot mix and goldenfeast (either schmitt's original or south american) They get both daily. Also they get a small cup of Zupreem fruit flavored pellets. I feed them more of the goldenfeast since it is human grade food with dried fruits, veggies, and granola. I add a little of the seed mix. I put the pellets in a seperate cup and just give them a few, pellets are highly processed and I don't really agree with feeding them mainly pelleted diets. In the morning and at dinner I offer them solid fresh foods, chopped, raw, cooked, diced, mashed, I always try to give them a varity. The conures favor apples, mango, papaya, mashed potatoes, corn, whole wheat bread, and sometimes they will eat pasta.

Mine are very busy birds that need constant stimulation. I have bought them window perches, so they can see outside. And portable playgyms so they can go from room to room with me. Conures are closley related to macaws, so they love to destroy things with their mini-macaw shaped beaks. Make sure you buy plenty of chewing toys to keep him busy! If they are mad- you will know. A common aggressive stance for a conure is to fluff up it"s head feathers and wiggle it's head around. Our sun will sometimes strike out at something with his beak. Once you get to know your bird you will become familiar with his body language.

  3. Amzon.com has lots of cheap books. Yahoo has several groups on pet birds. Probally on sun conures specifically also. And try these sites. Jo

  4. First off, don't get a bird until you know what they can and cannot eat, their behavior, what size cage you need for them, etc.  You will be spending hundreds of dollars to get a nice cage, plenty of toys, food, vet care, etc.

A sun conure, while very pretty, is also VERY LOUD!  My husband and I have two so I know what I'm talking about.  They can also be very clingy.  One of our sun conures is very attached to my husband so he always wants to be on his shoulder which means when he is put back in his cage, he gets upset.  And when they bite it does hurt, not going to lie about that.

For feeding, they need a good pellet diet with fruits and veggies to supplement.  You also need to give them fresh water at least once a day - more often if it gets dirty.

Sun conures are fun, but they are a big responsibility.  I really doubt you've put enough thought into this since you don't know what they eat or anything about their behavior yet you just want to go get one from the pet store.  This is an important decision and these birds can live for quite awhile...I suggest you get a goldfish if you want a pet.  Birds are very complex animals and are not easy to care for (if you do it right, if you just feed them pellets and give them water and that's it, yep they're easy, but they won't live a very long or fulfilling life if you do that.)
