The statement "mutation limits the rate of evolution" is BEST understood to mean

a. mutation is dependent on the rate of evolution

b. the rate of evolution can only increase at a certain maximum rate

c. the rate of evolution is dependent on mutation

d. mutation decreases the rate of evolution

e. because of mutation, the rate of evolution cannot rise above a certain maximum

ok i ask this question b4 on yahoo and they said C. but its confusing. can anyone explain why? because my initial answer was E because of the word "limit" in the statement.

  1. The problem is that mutation really doesn't have a maximum.  Mutations occur spontaneously in many occasions, but at the same time they can be induced by outside influence.  There really isn't a "certain maximum," though the final answer does sound believable.  The answer is C because the evolution is entirely dependent on mutation, which by that statement can go at any rate to any maximum.
