Hey Sushi lovers!! I am new to sushi and i was wondering if you guys could tell me some basic rolls to try. Also, an important question... what is the purpose of wasabi? Is it absolutely mandatory to use it? I heard it kills the germs from the raw fish so you must use it. If I don't use wasabi, am I potentially at risk from the germs on the fish? Do you guys use wasabi because you have to or because you like to eat it? Thanks to all! Keep enjoying sushi!

  1. I'm going to recomend the california roll like everyone else did. And wasabi is just to add  spicy flaver to any sushi. It is just Japanese horseradish. Wasabi and soy sauce is an excelant combination with any sushi! Ginger, which is the thin orangy stuff is supposed to make the taste of not-so-good tasting fish taste better.

  2. California Roll. It's delicious and very common so you'll find it almost ANYWHERE. You are not at risk. I mostly eat sushi with it because I like it. So you can eat wasabi with your sushi and take away the germs!!!

  3. Hum..I have never heard that one should use wasabi because of germs..raw fish, when prepared with fresh meat, is perfectly fine to eat..if you get something with germs, it is not going to matter if you use wasabi or not, you will get sick........anyway, in my opinion, the best sushi are salmon, tuna, california, and shrimp tempura.  The best of all of these being salmon.  I think the fish on top of the rice is best, but rolls are great too.  I use wasabi because the spiciness comes without warning and the feeling is somewhat addictive!  I LOVE IT!!  (Sliced pickled ginger is always included because it is to be eaten between rolls to cleanse the pallet).  Welcome to the Sushi Lover Club!

  4. California roll for sure! and teriayki chicken with cucumber, mayo and avocado!

  5. The California Roll is a classic because it is very moderate in taste; it pretty much pleases anyone. It's also good to try house specials. Almost all japanese restaurants have a special roll that they make, which is probably delicious. Anything else differs from one restaurant to another.

As for the wasabi, it's true that it kills germs but I don't really like it so I don't use it. You're not in serious harm if you don't use it. Just be careful and pay attention to the raw fish you're eating. Make sure it's fresh. If it doesn't seem fresh, get it switched. I have gotten sick eating unfresh fish therefore beware. If you're not comfortable eating raw fish, know that there is a whole other part to japanese dining than sushi and sashimi. Cooked eel with rice, teriyaki, tempura, dumplings, miso soup etc. are all worth a try. Enjoy!

  6. I've been eating sushi for about 8 years now and have never, ever been sick from any "bad" fish.  The wasabi is just for taste and I think the soy sauce is what made sushi "magic" for me!  I agree that the California roll is a good place to start, or if you do want to dig right into the raw, I usually take friends and share a sushi-boat or any sushi-for-two, so they get a taste of everything.  Then if you don't care for something, your sushi-loving friend will be happy to let you have what you do like and take what you don't!  ENJOY!!!

  7. thats rubbish it doesnt kill the germs from the fish lol its hot hot hot so i prefer not to eat it lol some people like wasabi coz they like the spice but no u definitly dont have to have it. personaly i prefer chiken sushi with avocado and cucumber, tuna is nice to but u can also add crab meat, prawns, salmon, whatever realy, generaly u will find avocado with all these types of sushi ( coz u gota have it ) lol, cucumber also goes well with it and a whole heap of soya sauce.....mmm

  8. The most common and for starters that would be California Rolls. That is really light sushi and it tastes delicious. After that (and if you like it of course) you can try sushi rolls of Eel with cream cheese and avocado. Delicious!!

About the wassabi, never heard anything like that. Wasabi is spicy, but it is a very unique kind of spice. Pasty and really strong if you take a lot of it so I wouldnt recommend to take lots of it lol. Umm, killing fish germs?? dunno bout that. I always eat my sushi with no wasabi and haven't got any 'fish germs' at all lol. Enjoy your sushi!!

  9. I agree that the California roll is good to start with..also try the rainbow roll..it has several different types of sushi on it, so you can try several.

The albacore tuna is very good to try..it's not a roll, but you can order a piece or two..

  10. Welocme to the wonderful world of sushi. The first rolls I ate were the California roll I/O along with a tuna roll. For pieces of sushi  try the salmon, snapper, or shrimp. If you want to be adventurous try the unagi.

I use the wasabi because I like the kick from the horseradish. I know people who hate spicy so won't use it. Of course, on the other end there are also those who like to use a lot of wasabi
