Question:

SUV Drivers, please don't be offended if I ask you this....?

I remember when people were down on SUVs for being gas-hogs and their drivers for being needlessly extravagant, but I was not one of those. This is my beef. I am at a stoplight turning right. If all is clear, I can go... right turn on red... but it seems every time an SUV is on my left, they pull up so far as to block my view of traffic coming from that direction. In order to see if I have a clear turn, I would have to pull out into traffic. Thus I am stuck at the light until it turns green. You already have a great view of everything. Why do you have to pull up so far and block my line of sight?

  1. I promise I will never do that to you.  Or anyone else.

  2. I drive a toyota 4runner. Firstly people are not gas-hogs because they do actually pay for their fuel. Secondly, to criticize 4wd drivers is really quite funny, seeing as I don't see them doing burnouts, speeding, or any form of stupid driving. It is more like "Look at me in my loud V8 sedan"..

Moving along, it is not always easy to move a big 4wd, and to say that minivans and wagons are available is pointless. I would never buy a minivan or a wagon, you know why? Because I like driving a gutsy truck. Sure there are sedans with power but I don't like cars, and I like going offroad. How many minivans do you see on moreton island , or in the bush. People can drive what they want, and hopefully will show curtesy when turning. I just find it funny that people who drive V8 sedans call 4wd's gas hogs. You suggest that we cut back on fuel therefore cutting back on 4wd capability (AND YES 4wds are better offroad then vans), yet you will not cut back on fuel therefore cutting back on power.

People criticize everything but what they own, and the egos of people in big trucks, are far less dangerous then the stupidity of hoons in some of the V8 cars and utes.

  3. There are too many reasons to list them all but here are a few i've noticed ...

1 ;  talking on cell phones

2 ;  no curtesy anymore for anyone else

      3 ; a 100 other reasons

I drive a big lifted wrangler but i am allways thinking and am very much aware when people need to see past my direction ,    what you are seeing is a blatant disregard for others...     be careful out there ,   i wish it were otherwise...

  4. Get yourself a bigger vehicle like a pick up truck.

  5. Its not unique to SUV's.. that happens to me and its all kinds of idiots

  6. Most (not all) SUV drivers are lousy drivers.

Here's the exception: if you actually NEED what an SUV gives you, that being the ability to tow and/or go off road, then fine, you are buying a vehicle that meets your needs.

However, most of the people that buy Suburbans, Durangos, etc, don't do either of these things. Those folks are, by a large, lousy drivers. Why do I say this? Because the best drivers are ones that actually enjoy driving, and if you do enjoy driving, why would you choose a top heavy truck that handles poorly if you didn't need it?

And don't even try to justify these behemoths simply on the merits of 4WD/AWD and bad weather where you live, there are sedans, wagons, and minivans out there with AWD that are just as good in the snow and still handle better than a Expedition.

So - to answer your question - lousy drivers, arrogant (look at me in my big SUV), that's why they block your view, they don't care about you.

The poster "confused" is apparently named correctly. I acknowledged that SUVs are better off road than vans up front, I said AWD cars/vans are just as good in the snow, where ground clearance is less of an issue. And a V8 Dodge Charger still gets better mileage than a V6 4 runner, so the mileage argument is weak - but I didn't mention mileage, just the crappy handling of (especially truck based) SUV's.

  7. This is very true. SUV's can see over cars no matter what so there is no reason for them to be pulling it front of other cars.
