I have a 2000 Chevy S-10 Blazer 2WD that needs a front wheel bearing on the drivers side and would like to know if I can replace just the bearing myself?

The SUV has 100,000 miles if that helps.

  1. Yes you can just replace the hub bearing however you will not be able to do this by yourself.

You will need hydraulic press and special adaptors so that you will be able to press the old bearing out and then install the new bearing.  You will also need to make sure that when you reinstall the new bearing that you have the complete unit aligned or you will ruin the bearing as well as the hub and or the housing assembly.

You will save a lot doing it this way if you can find an automotive shop that will press the old one out and reinstall the new one for you and this should cost between $45.00 to $85.00 dollars depending on where you live.

Replacing the complete bearing with the hub assembly will cost more but you will be able to do it yourself plus you wont need to worry about the old hub and or housing getting damaged or in may cases it may already be somewhat worn out.

Also with that many miles you really need to look at the passengers side wheel bearing as well, its best to be safe than sorry later…good luck.

  2. I agree with "ucantcme" except for one thing. If you look at the website for Harbor Freight (tools) you can buy a hydraulic press for $125. and always have it to do this job (and others) like it.  Buying tools is usually a good investment if you have the space in your garage.  If you have to replace a couple other bearings - then you've overcome/paid for the tool.
