SWATCH FIVB Quebec Open Jeep 2011 – Beach Volleyball News
Following the successful completion of the Moscow Grand Slam in Russia last week, the 2011 SWATCH FIVB World Tour will make its next stop in Quebec, Canada. The double-gender competition will be officially opened on Tuesday, July 19 with duos from all across the globe. The exciting event will continue until Sunday, July 24.
This is the second time that $380,000 FIVB SWATCH World Tour event is coming to Quebec. Last time, Quebec served as the host of the event in 2007. In the previous edition of the Quebec Open Jeep Tournament, American Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor emerged as title-winners in the women’s category. Similarly, the men’s section was dominated by Brazil’s Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos, who took away the gold.
This time around, a total of 103 beach volleyball duos from 29 countries will be on board to contest their skills. The grid of 103 teams will consist of 55 men’s tandems from 24 countries, while the 48 teams of opposite genders from 21 countries will also jump on board.
The St-Jean Berchmans and Seminaire des Peres Maristes in the Quebec borough of Sillery will set up the field of play for 2011 Quebec Open Jeep Tournament. The opening day of the tournament will receive fans free of cost. Nonetheless, the following days of the tournament will see management charge an admission fee to watch matches.
The host country will be represented by Josh Binstock/Richard Van Huizen, Christian Redmann/Ben Saxton, and Martin Reader/Chaim Schalk in the men’s division. Likewise, Canadian women’s main draw teams include Heather Bansley/Elizabeth Maloney, Marie-Andree Lessard/Annie Martin, and Kacie MacTavish/Julie Rodrigue.
Competition Formula
The beach volleyball action at the Quebec Open Jeep 2011 will start with the preliminary stage of Country Quota Playoffs in both gender categories on Tuesday. The CQs will be followed by Qualification Tournament on the next day. Furthermore, the 32-team Main Draw stage will be opened on the third day of the tournament. The single elimination bracket in the first round of the Main Draw will cause elimination for eight teams. Successful teams will play in the second round, in order to clinch spots in the quarter-finals. The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be staged on the same day, which is the second last day of the tournament. The final day of the tournament will feature the final four matches including the gold-medal match and classification match for third-position in the tournament. The activity will be rounded off at the weekend with the winners splitting the shared money of $30,000 per gender.
