  1. when you go into the water relax, flopping you're arms around like a drowning monkey won't help. if you take a deep breath then go on your back, you will be floating with little to no struggle at all. but i agree with everyone else; you should take a class first before you try.

  2. There's this great book/DVD out called "Total Immersion."  It really helps people start from the very beginning.  If you think you can't float, it's probably because you're not *balanced* in the water.  Everyone can float -- you have to lean *way* forward on your lungs until it feels like you are swimming downhill.  The book/DVD help you learn how to balance first, and then adds the strokes step by step.

    Good luck, and have fun!

  3. try to first go on the shallow end, And then get familiar with arm and leg movements, you could hold on to a wall and kick with your fest, then go to a deeper end and try moving your arms in and out in circular patterns, and your feet in small kicks under water, then try deeper water...in no time you will be able to float!

  4. The best thing for you to do is to contact the Red Cross for swimming instructions. You need to be able to put your face in the water and not react to it. Holding your breath is a simple as taking a deep breath, and not letting it out. You'll also need to learn that you can pressurize you nose by forcing just enough air into it to keep water out, but not blowing bubbles either. It all takes practice. The easiest way to learn to swim is face down. For practical lessons though, go see the Red Cross.

  5. Normally, people floaft if you just lie on your back and relax. To be honest, if its just going swimming with your friends, then just kick your legs  about and you wont drown. Or just ask your  friends to stay in the shallow end, if they are true friends, the wont take the mick :). Just hang onto the side :D.

  6. Sign up for a class near you. It is a better idea to be taught by a life guard than someone on line. I f you have a close friend that knows, dont be embarrassed to ask for help.
