Sabathia cruises and Cano hits in six in 10-0 win over the Seattle Mariners
The New York Yankees may be missing one of their superstars, but you would not know with the way they played against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
CC Sabathia pulled into a three way tie for most wins in the league by earning victory No. 17 in a 10-0 victory over the lowly Seattle Mariners on Sunday. Second baseman Robinson Cano continued to make his case for AL MVP honors by knocking in a career high six RBIs to lead the charge for the Yankees' offense.
Cano hit home run No. 25 on the season in the fifth inning, a grand slam over the right-center field fence. He added a single in the sixth inning that scored Eduardo Nunez and Nick Swisher to make the score 8-0. Nunez got the start at third with Alex Rodriguez on the disabled list with a strained calf. Cano has moved into the No. 4 spot in the batting order with Rodriguez out.
Austin Kearns and Jorge Posada helped Cano in the offensive department by adding home runs themselves. Kearns’ started the scoring off in the fourth inning and Posada padded the lead with his in the seventh inning.
With an eight run lead after six innings and a 57 minute rain delay half way through the inning, Yankees manager Joe Girardi pulled Sabathia out prior to the start of the seventh inning even though he had only thrown 76 pitches. Sabathia had his usual dominant stuff throwing six shutout innings and only allowing three hits while striking out eight. Kerry Wood and Joba Chamberlain combined to complete the shut out over the final three innings.
Sabathia earned his fourth in a row and 13th in his last 16 starts, and remains undefeated at home since the 2009 All-Star break going 15-0 in 20 starts in that time frame with an ERA of 2.17.
The win improved the Yankees to a Major League-best 77-47 record on the season. They were also able to maintain their one game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East who defeated the Oakland Athletics 3-2.
New York travels into Canada to start a seven day, six game road trip on Monday with the first of a three game series with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees are scheduled to start Ivan Nova against Brandon Morrow for the Blue Jays. Nova will be making his first career start after appearing for the Yankees earlier this season in relief.
