Sabathia’s 17th win and Cano’s 6 RBI leaves Mariners in tatters
New York Yankees Manager Joe Garrido couldn’t have asked for something more special than this. The Yanks had totally out classed the Seattle Mariners in their last game of the series, fetching 10 runs, while conceding nothing. So who were the main players responsible for the win? If your guess was Alex Rodriguez, then you are surely mistaken. The victory was owed to the pair of Carsten Charles Sabathia and Robinson Cano. The two pulled up some brilliant performances to bring the game home to a crowd of 46,778 at the Yankee Stadium.
Much of the match was played under wet weather as there was a 57 minute delay in the middle of the sixth inning due to rain showers. However, going into the match, New York was without their star performer Alex Rodriguez. The ‘A Rod’ has been out for a couple of days with a calf injury complication. With a missing star hitter, the Yankees didn’t have an issue as the other players in the squad got a shot on glory in their own way. Robinson Cano is one hitter who is looking to break free with his bounds. Bumping up to the clean up position has only made the player more dangerous in recent days. Yesterday gave an example of how underestimated the player really is.
The hitters weren’t the only one getting some space up the order. However, Sabathia was one pitcher to be wary of when the fixture came under play. The all-time star ball thrower has lived up to his 2009 Most Valuable Player status so far as the ace man went on to pitch a no hitter till the 5th. This game brought him to a season high of 17 game wins. The super spotter has gone on with 15 wins and no losses in his last 20 regular starts at the Yankee Stadium since his 2009 All Star break.
By sticking strictly to the encounter, the ace man delivered 8 strike outs in his 76 pitches and 6 innings. The player never conceded a run and only gave away 3 hits.
Compared to Sabathia, Luke French went for 5 runs in his 5 innings of pitching. While striking out just 1, the Seattle player gave away 5 walks and 2 home runs. The Mariners were battered across the park in humiliating fashion as the bullpen went for a separate 5 runs. Throwing the ball in just 8 innings could not harness a better result as the side was swooped away for a series sweep. The match wasn’t in any way a morale booster for the team.
Much was to blame on New York’s star hitters as they opened they’re scoring account in the bottom 4th. Austin Kearns got his crucial first run of the game when he smashed a 393 feet homer to the left, getting the Yankees on 1. What followed next was dubbed as the best moment of the game. Bases were filled with Derek Jeter, Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira in the bottom 5th. French intentionally walked Teixeira to bring up Cano in the strike zone. Much to his dislike, the massive hitter connected with pitcher’s delivery for a 425 feet homer to the right. Cano smashed his 4th grand slam of his career. The Yankees rejoiced as they suddenly went up by 5 runs.
The Yankees were now in full swing and they went in to score more when the bottom 6th came into session. Derek Jeter hit a sacrifice fly that got Brett Gardner to score. Cano followed the move up with a Runs Batted In (RBI) double when he singled to the right centre. Eduardo Nunez and Swisher were able to score off the move, increasing the score to 8 runs for the Yankees. Jorge Posada came in the bottom 7th and offered his own personal share of hits, when he smashed a 373 feet homer to the right.
The scoring phase came to a close in the bottom 8th when Ramiro Pena got on the score sheet as Marcus Thames singled to the left. This brought up 10 runs on board for the Yankees and closed the game on nil for the Seattle Mariners.
