Sabine Lisicki, Elena Vesnina, Sania Mirza proceed to the third round of the 2011 Family Circle Cup
Sabine Lisicki upsets Marion Bartoli in straight sets 6-2, 6-3
Wildcard Sabine Lisicki surprised spectators in her second round match against French pro Marion Bartoli by sending the third seed home in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. It took the German pro just one hour and sixteen minutes to oust
her opponent.
Lisicki is currently ranked over 150 spots lower than Bartoli at World Number 182, while the French pro is Number 12. The German pro is also younger by five years, but has managed to defeat Bartoli once before to bring their head
to head record to 2-1 for Sabine Lisicki.
Lisicki wowed spectators by scoring two aces and breaking her opponent four times to take the match with 57 per cent of the total points. She will take on Indian tennis pro Sania Mirza in the third round of the event.
Elena Vesnina dismisses Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4, 7-6(6)
American seeded player Bethanie Mattek-Sands lost her second round match against Elena Vesnina of Russia, going down in straight sets to the lower-ranked player. Vesnina ousted her 6-4, 7-6(6) to win the match in a little under
an hour and fifty minutes.
Vesnina is ranked World Number 56, while Mattek-Sands currently stands at World Number 41. The two players have not had an on-court meeting prior to this.
Vesnina made a concerted effort to win the match, particularly in the second set. The American pro almost got the better of her in this set, but Vesnina remained determined and stuck to the baseline in her attempt to make progress
at Charleston. She took seven points more than her opponent to win the match 6-4, 7-6(6).
The Russian pro will compete against Australian tennis pro Samantha Stosur in the third round of the event.
Sania Mirza undoes Vania King in three sets 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2
Indian tennis pro Sania Mirza seems to be all set to get rid of the losing streak which has plagued her over the past few months, as she defeated American player Vania King from a set down in the second round of the 2011 Family
Circle Cup.
Sania Mirza is currently ranked World Number 90, a few places ahead of Number 109 Vania King. The two players have never competed against each other prior to this.
Mirza committed seven double faults during the match, but also broke King nine times out of fifteen opportunities. She managed to win the match by taking a sizable twenty points more than her opponent.
The Indian tennis pro will take on Germany’s wildcard tennis pro Sabine Lisicki in the third round of the Charleston event.
