Sabine Lisicki and Agnieszka Radwanska rally past their rivals – Wimbledon Championships 2013
German Sabine Lisicki and the Polish top ranked star Agnieszka Radwanska required three sets to outshine their opponents at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Saturday.
As a result, both seeds secured a spot in the fourth round at this Major grass court event taking place in London, United Kingdom.
The 23rd seed, Lisicki, made a dismal entry at this match and gifted away the opening set. However, she turned the winds towards her favour after that and ultimately registered a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory against the former US Open champion, Samantha Stosur.
The German seed commented in a post match presser after stealing the show, “Sam played a fantastic match. I think going through that challenge makes me feel ready for the next one, as well. There are always things to improve, but I felt great out there.”
Seeded 14th in this event, Stosur drew the first blood in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. She then held her composure and eventually sealed the opener by winning six games to four.
Lisicki re-focused in the following set. She got the coveted break in the fifth game and leaped to a 4-1 lead. The German availed another break chance in the end and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
The former world number 12, Lisicki maintained consistency in her game in the deciding set. She broke her rival’s opening serve and jumped to a 3-0 lead. After Stosur came on the score sheet in the fourth game, the German stroke out the last three games
and pocketed the decider with a breadstick.
As a result, Lisicki sets-up a date with the world number one, Serena Williams, on the Centre Court. The American icon slaughtered the 42-year-old, Kimiko Date-Krumm, with a 6-2, 6-0 win to progress.
Seeded fourth in this event, Radwanska lost her path in the second set against the American teenager, Madison Keys. However, she re-gained her strength in the third and eventually summed up a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 score line.
The Polish star stated in a courtside interview after earning the glory, “She was playing great tennis. In the second set two easy mistakes cost me one set. So in the third set I had to really focus on my serve and take my chance when I got it. She didn't
put so many first serves in during that game, and there was my chance, and that's why I won the set. When I had break points, a couple of times I couldn't do anything.”
The Pole will square off against the Bulgarian star, Tsvetana Pironkova, in the round of 16. The Bulgarian overpowered Petra Martic with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win to set-up this epic battle.
