Sabine Lisicki halts Petra Cetkovska to reach quarterfinals – Wimbledon Championships 2011
German wildcard entrant Sabine Lisicki fended off early resistance by Czech Petra Cetkovska to win in straight sets at Wimbledon Championships 2011, a grass court Grand Slam event held in London, England. She barely sweated in
the final set to register a 7-6(3), 6-1 victory over the 26-year-old Czech to advance into the last eight on Monday.
A former world number twenty-two, Lisicki outshined the Czech, a former top fifty, to book a final eight spot at SW-19. Facing for the first time, the German downed Cetkovska with a breadstick to take lead in their head-to-head
series by 1-0.
Troisdorf native, Lisicki showed her class in a hard fought battle in the opening set before ceiling it in forty-four minutes. She confidently held her opening serve and then maintained consistency level in the game to keep the
remaining serves. Despite losing the serve in seventh game, the German quickly roared back by breaking Cetkovska’s serve in the very next game. The set went to a tie-breaker where she dominated to clinch the opener with a 7-6(3) win.
21-year-old German is in awesome run of form on grass as she won a title at Birmingham after defeating fourth seeded Slovak Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets. Lisicki entered this major event with same spirit and slew Latvian
Anastasija Sevastova with double breadsticks in her opening round match. Her confidence further rose when she upset French Open winner and the third seed, Li Na in the second round. Lisicki then earned a straight set victory over Japanese qualifier Misaki
Doi in straight sets to set up this match.
Lisicki re-kindled the Birmingham spark in the second set as she unleashed flurry of groundstrokes to reel off first four games in a row before the Czech could hold on. She then fished out easy points in the next two games to secure
a breadstick in twenty-four minutes.
Next challenge for Lisicki is the winner of the match between ninth seeded French Marion Bartoli and seventh seeded American Serena Williams. The German needs to practice hard to advance further in this event. She needs to stay
focus all the time and keep her momentum.
