Sabine Lisicki improves her career-high ranking – Tennis News
German number two, Sabine Lisicki, climbs one place to the career-high 12th spot in the world rankings in the latest edition of the Women Tennis Association. It has been a tipsy turvy season for the German lady who has
been surrounded by niggling injuries but she has been able to maintain her ranking in fact improved it.
Auckland tour started her New Year campaign where she incurred an ankle injury and pulled out of the second round against her fellow compatriot, Angelique Kerber, who is the latest entrant to the Top-10 players of the world. However,
she recovered quickly from that injury and reached the fourth round of the Australian Open; devastating the likes of Shahar Peer and Kuznetsova before falling apart to the reigning Rome champion, Maria Sharapova.
She lost both her rubbers matches in the Federation Cup tie against Czech Republic and fell to her compatriot, Kerber, in the opening round of the Qatar Ladies Open for the second time in the year. She was ousted by the Pole number
one, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the quarter-final round of the Dubai Duty Free Championships and left Indian Wells after her first match against the Spanish representative, Lourdes Dominguez-Lino.
Miami proved to be a slightly better tournament for her as she reached the fourth round before falling apart to the Chinese number one, Li Na, in three-sets. She was playing extremely well in the Family Circle Cup at Charleston
but incurred an injury in the match against American number one, Serena Williams. It was the quarter-final battle of the tournament and the 22-year-old cried after failing to complete even the first set. She received a treatment from her physio after three
games into the match and resumed the proceedings but just two serves hurt her ankle further and she left the arena in tears.
The problem continued for a long time that forced her to miss out of the Mutua Madrid Open. She returned to save few points in Rome but lost an epic three-setter at the hands of the Kiwi superstar, Marina Erakovic. However, she
is still holding on to her career-high ranking.
