Sabine Lisicki outclassed by Urszula Radwanska in the second round clash – AEGON Classic 2012
Upsets keep coming on the second day of the AEGON Classic, with the two top seeded competitors crashing out of the tournament. First, it was the top seeded Italian veteran, Francesca Schiavone, who bowed out to the Japanese youngster,
Misaki Doi and the second seed defending champion, Sabine Lisicki of Germany, suffered an upset defeat at the hands of the rising Pole tennis star, Urszula Radwanska on Wednesday.
The 63rd ranked Pole youngster outplayed the world number 15, Lisicki, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to book a berth in the third round of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour event in Birmingham, England.
21-year-old Radwanska showed the glimpses of her elder sister, the world number three, Agnieszka Radwanska, throughout the matchup and had no troubles in surpassing the bleak game play of the second seed German. She took just one hour and 26 minutes of play
to register her 23rd victory of the running season.
Lisicki has not been performing up to the mark in the recent couple of months and her deteriorating form has resulted in a 10-13 winning record for the current season so far. Hampered with multiple injuries, Lisicki is labouring
hard to find her winning groove before the two upcoming mega events, the Wimbledon Championships and the Olympic Games but her dismal performance on Wednesday was quite disappointing. She could barely register a single break point in the entire matchup, while
suffering three cracking ones from the unseeded Pole youngster.
"I had some breathing problems today, which didn't make life easier, but I never thought about quitting," Lisicki said after the match. "I was fighting for every point as much as I could, but I made some poor shot choices out there.
I have good memories from last year here. I just couldn't make it today."
Radwanska’s victory levelled the head-to-head record at 1-1 against Lisicki and she will next face the unseeded American opponent, Irina Falconi, in the third round of the AEGON Classic later this week. Falconi also registered
an upset victory over the 14th seed Hungarian, Timea Babos, 6-0, 6-4, in the second round battle.
