Sabine Lisicki overthrows Samantha Stosur in the 2nd round – Bank of the West Classic 2011
Thursday was the continuation of the second round of the Bank of the West Classic 2011. Sabine Lisicki and Samantha Stosur played on the outdoor courts of the Taube Family Tennis Center, Stanford University, California. The German (Sabine Lisicki) won the match 6-3, 7-5 against her Australian opponent (Samantha Stosur).
In the beginning of the first set both the players had struck one double fault each, however, Sabine smashed five aces along with a number of ground strokes and used her serve as an offensive weapon against her opponent. Although, the only difference between the total service points of both the players was seven percent (Stosur attaining fifty six percent and Sabine sixty three percent) Sabine also had an average forty four percent win on her total return points which gave her an edge over her opponent (Samantha had won only thirty seven percent on her total return points of the set).
Stosur was not able to convert her opponent’s break points because Sabine had a strong defence and managed to save the only break point chance she had committed. Thus, Sabine won by converting fifty percent of her opponent’s break points and won the set with ten percent more points than Samantha’s in the total set points.
However, during the second set both the players had excellent serves, but Sabine’s was exceptional as she was able to ace eight times and even though her definitude stumbled twice (2-double faults) she clenched eighty percent of her total service points. Samantha had lost most of her points because of a poor return and was only able to grab twenty percent of her total return points.
The German hung in the set, and did not let her defence weaken instead she struck no break points and availed fifty percent of break points that came her way. Lisicki triumphed over Samantha by achieving eight more points in the total set points.
Born on the 22nd of September, 1989, Sabine achieved her career high singles rank on the 3rd of August 2009 when she became world number 22. This year out of the forty five matches she has played, she won thirty three and lost only twelve. Sabine Katharina Lisicki has won two WTA singles tournaments in her career (2009 and 2011). She is the only female player to have made it to the semi-finals of Wimbledon as a wild card entry.
The 21-year-old will play against Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinal.
