The 2011 Golden Gate Junior World Cup 2011 was held on March 6, at the venue of National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine in Kiev, Ukraine. It covered the discipline of both Men’s and Women’s Sabre individuals that
was conducted the same day.
Fencing participants from seven countries were found to be the part of the Tableaux-32 of Men’s Sabre individuals. The most promising male fencers among these belonged to Italy, Ukraine and Russia.
Ukrainian and Russian male fencers were equally dominating the top-16 spots of the event along with a single Italian sabreur named, Riccardo Nuccio, qualifying the next round too.
The top-8 included half fencers of the host nation Ukraine followed by two Russians leaving only two seeds behind for any other national.
In top-4, Ukraine again took half the seeds with the help of its male sabreurs Oleksiy Statsenko and Yevgeniy Statsenko whereas the other two were taken by Italy’s Riccardo Nuccio and Russia’s Trofim Velikiy.
To qualify for the top-4, the toughest fight taken place was between Italy’s Ricaardo and Russia’s Efim Gofman with only one hit difference at the close of the bout by 15-14 score.
In the semi-final bout, both the Ukrainian natives got to confront each other for a top two seed and Yevgeniy turned out to be the stronger one, thus defeating Oleksiy by 15-12 score. On the other hand, the Italian single-handedly trounced Trofim, hence
qualifying for the gold-winning bout.
The final bout was found to be a clear win for Riccardo over the host fencer Yevgeniy with a score difference of five points at 15-10, clinching gold for his country Italy. The host fencers improved their former day medal of bronze to silver in the day’s
event along with another bronze win by Oleksiy in Men’s Sabre that was shared with Russia’s Trofim.
In Women’s Sabre event, female fencers from very few countries had taken part in the individual competition. Among top-16, ten female sabreurs were from Russia followed by three, Polish, two Ukrainian and one Turkish fencer.
The top-8 was also dominated by Russian females with five out of eight seeds captured by them.
The competition was found to have risen among the contenders for the top four seeds. Russia’s Alina Meshcheriakova defeated her native fellow Dina Galiakbarova for qualifying into the semi-finals by a winning hit, turning the tie-up into a victory by a 15-14
score. Similarly, another head-to-head face-off between two Russian natives Alina Ozolina and Alexandra Shatalova took place in which the winning point was taken up by Alina, heading her way into the semi-finals.
The fencers to advance to the top 4 were Russia’s Ozolina and Meshcheriakova and Ukraine’s Lera Chudikova and Maryna Semenko.
In the semi final round, Meshcheriakova took a single-handed win over Chudikova whereas semenko and Ozolina had a fearsome battle to reach the finals. There was a tie at 14 each when Ozolina took the win-hit and advanced into the final bout.
The final of the event was yet again between two Russian natives that was a tight match, but soon Ozolina outshone with two hit difference at the end of the fight with scores at 15-13.
