Sabrina Marzahn earns Women’s 800m freestyle gold: Day One – 42nd International Swimming Festival
Germany’s Sabrina Marzahn served notice of her talent by clinching the gold medal of Women’s 800m freestyle on first day of the 2011 International Swimming Festival. The session was held at Aachen, Germany on Friday, October 15.
20-year-old Marzahn went full throttle in the sixteen-lap freestyle swim and ensured her gold finish with a spectacular timing of 8 minutes and 39.83 seconds.
She gained a marginal lead over her challengers in the first round, posting a time of 1 minute and 01.29 seconds for the first round while her team-mate, Rosalie Kathner posted an effort of 1 minute and 02.12 seconds for the same distance. She continued
her outstanding performance throughout the event and ended her first half in 4 minutes and 19.56 seconds as compared to Rosalie’s 4 minute and 20.30 seconds effort.
Marzahn sustained her fastest spot in the second half of the swim, where she kept dominating her competitors and was the first swimmer to appear on the finishing wall.
With her persistent efforts and her astonishing skills, Marzahn kept on enhancing her lead over her challengers. Rosalie struggled hard to get rid of her former swimmer but the 20-year-old devastated her hopes and showed her determination for the crown in
a scintillating fashion.
Rosalie remained 5.93 seconds slower than gold medallist and hit the wall with a second fastest timing of 8 minutes and 45.76 seconds. The silver medallist faced a tough time from Marieke Nijhuis of Netherlands, who tried to escape her on the finishing end
for second position, but seemed helpless in front of Rosalie’s phenomenal effort.
The 19-year-old Nijhuis remained just 0.34 seconds slower from her former finisher and clocked a time of 8 minutes and 46.10 seconds for bronze medal.
Marzahn expressed contentment over her gold winning effort whereas the German swimmer also articulated her desire of representing her nation at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
In addition, the winners were called upon the medal rostrum for their invincible efforts while the battle will continue for two more days as the championship will conclude on October 16.
