Sacha Jones hits back to outshine Yuliya Beygelzimer in round one – Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2012
Australian youngster, Sacha Jones, made an epic comeback to stomp over the Ukrainian challenger, Yuliya Beygelzimer, in a three-set thriller at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2012 on Tuesday. She summed up a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory against the Donetsk native
to labour into the pre-quarters at this clay court tournament taking place from 9th June to 17th June in Austria.
Jones made a sloppy entry at these Austrian red clay courts and gifted away the opening set. However, she made a spectacular comeback and carved out the victory with a breadstick in almost two hours. After earning the glory in their first match-up, the Aussie
not only took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the world number 174 but also booked a spot in the second round.
The 28-year-old Ukrainian made a slow start at this WTA International tournament and suffered the first blow in the opening game to fall at 0-1. She recovered in the very next game but gifted away his serve again and trailed at 1-2. However, Beygelzimer
stayed in the game and not only snatched her break back in the fourth game but got the breakthrough in the last game, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to four.
Ranked 212th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Jones rebounded in the proceeding set and earned the critical break in the third game to jump to a 3-1 lead. She broke her opponent’s serve once more and leaped to a 5-2 lead. Despite squandering her chance
of serving out the set, the Aussie cashed in another break chance in the last game and clicked the equaliser by winning six games to three.
At the time the final set started, Jones’ skills were fully polished. She blasted massive groundstrokes to reel off the opening five games in a row before the Ukrainian could hold on. The Aussie then plucked her serve once more and pocketed the decider with
a breadstick.
Jones will next face seventh seeded Alize Cornet who trashed the Romanian challenger, Edina Gallovits-Hall, in straight sets to set up this epic battle.
