Sacha Modolo wins 5th stage as Gregor Gazvoda takes overall standing in 2011 Tour of Qinghai Lake
Colnago - CSF Inox team’s Sacha Modolo won the mass sprint of the fifth stage of 2011 Tour of Qinghai Lake on Wednesday, July 6. Gregor Gazvoda maintained his overall leader’s jersey.
The race started in Xihaizhen and ended in Mole Town, Qilian. The 24-year-old Italian cyclist took a total of 3 hours, 9 minutes and 7 seconds to cover the distance of 123 kilometres.
Recently, Sacha won the second place in the Ronde van Drenthe. He grabbed third place in the Giro del Veneto and fourth place in Milano-Sanremo in 2010.
Mateusz Taciak (CCC Polsat Polkowice) was the runner-up and Volodymyr Bileka (Amore & Vita) finished third with the same timing of Italian.
Mariusz Witecki of CCC Polsat Polkowice was in good form and tried his best to catch the 12 cyclists, but was unable to maintain his pace and grabbed the 13th place with a difference of 5 seconds, ahead of Omar Lombardi and Wenlong Zhang.
A group of three cyclists, which included Tobias Erler (Tabriz Petrochemical Team), Jonathan Clarke (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling) and Javier Ramirez Abeja (Andalucia Caja Granada) made their first breakaway. After a few kilometres to go, the last two cyclists
were caught by the peloton and Tobias increased his pace and won the first sprint.
Javier Ramirez again his increased his pace, while Tobias was unable to retain his lead and Spanish powered his speed to take the second sprint.
Wenlong Zhang (China 361° Cycling Team) took the first mountain of the stage with 7 points ahead of Durasek, who was in the second spot with 2 points down to Zhang. However Abbas Saeidi increased his pace and took the second mountain. However, Durasek took
the overall King of Mountain title with 14 points ahead of Saeidi.   
Perutnina Ptuj team’s Gregor Gazvoda took the overall general classification with a timing of 15 hours, 37 minutes and 10 seconds. Dmitry Gruzdev (Kazakhstan) was in the second spot and 4 seconds behind Gregor.
Mateusz Taciak finished third with a difference of 1 minute and 2 seconds, while the  stage winner, Modolo was in the 22nd place with a difference of 2 minutes and 40 seconds.
The next stage will start in Qilian. All the riders will cover the distance of 103 kilometres.
