Sachia Vickery runs past Iva Mekovec into Girls’ Singles 2nd round – US Open 2011
The two un-seeded players to contest in the first round match at girls’ singles draw of the US Open 2011 were American Sachia Vickery and Iva Mekovec from Croatia. The two took up the gauntlet on show court 7 of the USTA Billie
Jean King National Tennis Center. In a day full of American winners, Sachia Vickery was not to be left behind and she rushed past her opponent in a straight set victory of 6-0, 6-1.
At the US Open Vickery hit the tennis courts with a full swing Monday afternoon as she was able to secure a berth in the second round in Flushing Meadows New York.
Dominating from the first point Vickery opened the set to1-0, she then broke Mekovec in the second game and by the third game was leading 3-0. She then broke Mekovec in the fourth game and held her serve for the last time to stamp
her lead with a 5-0. She broke the Croatian for the last time in the sixth game and served her the opening set at 6-0.
Vickery was a stronger opponent and was not broken once during the entire set. With a strong baseline play she targeted 79% of her first serves and bagged four times as many total points as her opponent’s.
Not wanting to lose that upper hand, she kept an assertive style by utilizing her back hand swing and her forehand ground play; she eventually won the second set as well. On the contrary, Mekovec did not earn her lesson from the
first set and went on to performing poorly in the second set as well.
Opening the second set was again the stars and stripes home girl (Vickery). Both the players won on their serves in the first two games but from there onwards Vickery started to not only hold her serve but also broke her opponent
in the fourth game. By the fifth game she won on her serve and in the sixth took the advantage to break her opponent for the third and last time. By carefully doing what she was best at – holding her serve; she won the second set and the match.
Amazingly Vickery was not broken even once during the entire match and won all her service points, thus by attaining twice as many points in the second set, she secured a place in the second round where she will be facing the thirteen
seeded Anett Kontaveit from Estonia.
